Equipment List Kit List - 20 litre rucksack to carry water, food and spare clothes.
- Waterproof jacket – lightweight and breathable for putting on in case of an afternoon shower.
- Waterproof trousers – lightweight trousers to pull on in case of rain.
- Gaiters – useful but not essential. The paths are usually fairly dry in the warm summer weather and well drained. Short half length gaiters can be carried if you wish.
- Walking boots – waterproof, breathable boots that offer ankle support with a good tread.
- Walking socks – breathable socks with padded areas around the ankles and toes to allow your feet comfort and any moisture to be wicked away. Buying the thickest socks is not always the best idea, a medium thickness should be sufficient as in warm weather it is important to prevent your feet from getting too hot.
- Walking trousers – comfortable, loose trousers are a must, there are many good types on the market from the leading manufacturers made of quick drying and wicking fabrics. Ones that you can zip off the legs to become shorts are very good.
- Walking shorts – comfortable, loose shorts with pockets made of quick drying and wicking fabrics.
- Tops – a variety of tops is good to have from lightweight thermal tops with long and short sleeves to again made of quick drying wicking fabrics. Cotton is best avoided as it does not dry when it gets wet.
- Fleeces – an outer fleece with long sleeves is good for layering if the temperature drops you should carry a spare layer in your rucksack.
- Gillet – a gillet is a good think to carry for layering or when its not cool enough to wear a fleece but not warm enough for your t-shirt.
- Hat – a hat is useful if the weather is bad and the wind is strong to put on.
- Gloves – a think pair of windstopper gloves is good to carry in your rucksack.
- Walking poles – a pair of extendable walking poles is essential, they can relieve up to 10% of the impact on your joints whist walking downhill. They can help in many ways on ascents, difficult rocky ground and for balance. An extendable pair with soft grips and a wrist loop are ideal.
- Other things you can take with you: penknife; tissues; small first aid kit with plasters, compeed, zinc tape, painkillers; camera.
